“America has never been an empire. We may be the only great power in history that had the chance, and refused — preferring greatness to power and justice to glory.”

i disagree that the USA hasn’t had an empire, only it has been called by a different name. “empire” is defined by dictionary.com as:
“a group of nations or peoples ruled over by an emperor, empress, or other powerful sovereign or government: usually a territory of greater extent than a kingdom, as the former British Empire, French Empire, Russian Empire, Byzantine Empire, or Roman Empire.”
the united states has had influence over numerous other countries for certainly the last half a centuary, and have often been prepared to use force to make sure that (especially in poor countries with numerous natural resources) people who pay lip serice to Washington get into Government.
this allows the US government to be able to ensure that their short term goals for stability are met, without concern for the long term effects it may have on those regions, whilst allowing the USA the deniability of not technically being incharge should the whole situation get sticky for any reason.
and as for greatness and justice… well surely that depends on the point of view that you look at it from. with the “injustice” of the end of the first world war, most Germans felt what Mr Hitler did in 1939 by taking back lands that had been “stolen” from them in the treaty of versailles would have been both great AND bringing justice.
i’m not comparing the US government to the Nazis, i’m just using an illustration to demonstrate how this comment is flawed and incorrect.
