"It was for freedom that Christ has set us free..." Gal 5:1

jesus-pilate-1 In John 18:38 Pontius Pilate famously asked Jesus the question “what is truth?”

I once heard R.C. Sproul give this definition: “That which corresponds to reality.”

One of the interesting things about a Biblical Christian Worldview is that it assumes the existence of an absolute objective truth that is external to mankind.

We are not the source of truth. Our opinions or preferences do not decide what is true. There is a real truth that is really real and it proceeds from God, not from us.

Jesus said that He is “the way, the truth, and the life.” Jesus is the truth! There is no truth outside of Him.

So why does this matter?

Because it has huge implications on the way people think today. A common thought today is the absurd notion that truth is a matter of personal preference.

I remember someone that I knew back in the late 1980s. I used to speak to this person about the reality of the One True God. This person, however, insisted that “that’s what’s true for you, but that’s not what’s true for me!”

The world wants there to be “tolerance,” yet the one thing nobody wants to tolerate is that which is Really Real – Real Live Truth.

How do we know truth?

  1. Nature – The Bible says in Romans 1:20 that all of creation testifies to God. Nature is a source of truth.
  2. Conscience/Intuition – The Bible also says in Romans 2:14 that man has the law written on His conscience. God has put something in us that knows His Truth on some level!
  3. The Holy Spirit – John 16:13 says the the Holy Spirit guides believers into all truth.
  4. The Written Word of God (The Bible) – We have only one external, objective and authoritative source of truth – The 66 books of the Old and New Testaments.

truth_out_there I suspect that we as human beings were designed to know Truth primarily through relating to God, but because of sin our perception of nature, our conscience, and our sensing of the Holy Spirit is all prone to deception. Thus God brought into the world an external objective source of truth in the Bible. Although we can even deceive ourselves about what that says!

Eastern Worldview denies any real objective truth. Naturalistic worldviews say that real reality only consists of nature itself.

But the Christian Worldview holds that God Himself is the Truth, and therefore the source of all truth.

So when you are trying to analyze the world around you and make applicaton of truth, remember that your nature and your conscience are sources of truth, the Holy Spirit will lead you into truth, but the Revealed Written word of God trumps an other perception of truth!

I just read this article at CNN.com:

My daughter and her partner were married in 2004 and I couldn’t ask for a better spouse for my daughter, or daughter-in-law for me. However, my attitude traveling to the wedding was far different from my attitude on the trip home. God attends gay weddings. Who knew?

People have debated scriptures over the issues of gay marriage and homosexuality until they are red in the face—red because both sides are so angry.

When I asked a wise friend how she reconciled the scriptures with her daughter’s homosexuality, she said, “I can’t. So I just let God sort it out.” I took her advice and I learned things about God I would never have known if I were still telling Him what His scriptures mean.

If we spent as much time obeying God’s two greatest commandments, which are that we love Him and love our neighbors as ourselves, and less time policing everyone who is different from us, imagine what a world it would be.

Here is the response that I posted:

(Article Continued Below)

“When I hear terms like ‘God’s design’ and ‘Biblical marriage’ I have to wonder who decides these things.”

That is the heart of the question isn’t it. WHO decides these things?

I have often heard this argument: “there are so many different interpretations of the Bible” with an implied “therefore we should not try and interpret it rightly.”

Here is the basic traditional Protestant Christian Doctrine: The Bible is the standard of truth and ethics. We may struggle to understand it. We may debate what it means, but in the end it ACTUALLY MEANS SOMETHING whether we come to the right conclusion or not!

The Bible is the standard, not man’s interpretation of the Bible.

Who decides these things? God does, and he puts instructions in the Bible for us to understand. We can do our best to study but we have to start with the assumption that God is the judge of what is and is not true.

The first account of marriage in the Bible is about how a man leaves his mother and father and cleaves to his wife. One man. One woman. Family unit. Produces children. Vehicle for multiplication and dominion.

This was all in the context of “it is not good for a man to be alone.”

In other words: A one man, one woman family producing and training up children is the fundamental basic building block of society as God designed it!

We mess with this at our peril.

It is not love to say “no problem” to someone who rejects this and tries to replace it with a “same-sex” marriage. In fact, this is very practically a whole lot more like hate.

It is not love to tell someone who is destroying their own life and the lives of others and their potential in God that nothing is wrong.

Love says “God designed you – follow His design!”

Same-sex “marriage” cannot be love. In fact, it cannot be marriage. Even if we “legalize” it as a society. To say “same-sex marriage” is like saying “non-marriage marriage.”

This is what happens when we depart from Jesus Christ and His Word (The Bible) as the standard for truth and life – we become insane and speak nonsense and call it love.

Illinois recently abolished the death penalty.

I posted a comment about that on one off my Facebook friend’s wall about how this action devalued human life. He asked me what I meant and I wrote the following comment which I hope will be useful to you:

In Genesis there is a description of an increase of violence and murder from the time when Cain killed Abel until the flood.

After the flood God established the first “civil government” type law recorded in the Bible. It predates the Mosaic law and was given to the ancestors of all mankind – Noah and his sons and their families.

That law? “Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed….”

The reason God gives for that law? “for in the image of God has God made mankind.”

The reason implied by the Biblical context? The death penalty for murder is needed to prevent a complete collapse into violence and murder. The value of each individual human being as made in the image of God needs to be established and preserved by putting murderers to death.

(These quotes are from Genesis 9:5-6: http://bit.ly/gTLPqv.)

So God Himself established that human beings should execute the death penalty for murder and that the reason is because of the value of human beings as the “image of God.”

Therefore, to disregard God on the issue of the death penalty for murder is to devalue human life.

Governor Quinn in Illinois has now cooperated with the legislature in Illinois to devalue human life by abolishing the death penalty for murder.
